I like eating vegetables. But I draw the line at the wheelchairs, I don't need that much iron in my diet.

In all seriousness, situations like this are why it's important that you have a Living Will. Then there will be no questions as to what your wishes are. I've had one since I was 20 yrs old and made sure everyone in my family knows I don't want to be kept alive by any machine I have to be constantly hooked up to.

As for the Schiavo case, this never should have been an issue for Congress or the President to be involved in. Case in point: where were all of these Congressmen and the President last week when a young, black child's feeding tube was removed?

...thank you, Jor. That was...enlightening.

The thing that really gets me is that, if, if she has some rudimentary awareness...how truly, truly nightmarish it must be for her. Can you imagine being trapped like that?

Perish the thought.

Doesn't it seem more like "god's will" to let people die without intervention?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Depends on your interpretation of God.

If you are a fundamentalist who believes that the Bible is the grand authority on everything, then the answer is 'no'. ALL deliberate ending of human life is considered murder if you follow traditional Catholic doctrine.

I happen to believe otherwise but my interpretation of God is isn't based on what's written in a book.

...well, madadman, my gods demand that, in order to die nobley and with honor, I must do so in battle. Which kinda sucks, since people just run away screaming when you jump out at them brandishing a battle axe and demanding they forfeit their women and land to you these days...

If this was happening in 1905, one hundred years ago, it wouldn't even have been an issue. Had she even survived her heart attack at all, she would have lingered for a few days, unresponsive, unaware, and died without anyone ever questioning it, just accepting it. And they would have called that "God's Will".

...and there is this very, very valid point as well...

The Schiavo episode highlights not only how far to the right the GOP-controlled Congress has lunged -- a 2003 Fox News poll found just 2 percent of Americans think the government should decide this type of right-to-die issue -- but also how paralyzed the mainstream press has become in pointing out the obvious: that the GOP leadership often operates well outside the mainstream of America. The press's timidity is important because publicizing the poll results might extend the debate from one that focuses exclusively on a complicated moral and ethical dilemma to one that also examines just how far a radical and powerful group of religious conservatives are willing to go to push their political beliefs on the public.
